Robbie Veltman
With only three years of dance experience, Robbie proves you don’t have to grow up dancing to be a part of the community. An avid live music fan and show attendee, she finally got sick of watching the dancers have all the fun and gave it a shot. She was quickly hooked and took East Coast Swing, Lindy, and Balboa lessons.
Her favorite style has always been Two-Step, and she was frustrated by the lack of class options, so she started her own class to help grow the local dance and live music scene. Her favorite part of teaching is building confidence in new dancers and assuring them it’s always more fun to be dancing than not.
James Jones
James Jones is a Mexican-American artist and social dancer with over four years of experience in 2-step, West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Salsa, Balboa, and Slow Balboa. He discovered dancing after attending countless country shows and finally deciding he didn’t want to just watch—he wanted to be part of the dancing community.
Dance is a connection—both to the music and to the friends he's made along the way. As a teacher, there’s nothing better than seeing a student have a breakthrough moment, when they finally get a move they’ve been trying to learn and start to truly enjoy themselves on the dance floor.
Peggy Lee
Peggy’s dance passion started with taking Swing dance lessons in high school, where she fell in love with partner dancing to live music. She then learned Lindy Hop, Balboa, and various genres of Swing. She used to ‘crash’ the live country music shows at the Landmark with the swing dancers back in 2014, but then start Two-Stepping in 2018. Lately, she’s been taking a deep dive into the Latin genres of dance with Salsa, Bachata, and Cumbia.
Her favorite thing about dancing is how music lights up a fire within people. It is within teaching that she found her “calling” to guide people towards releasing their rhythmic energy. Whether you have started late in life, have insecurities, or inhibitions, everyone is learning and feeding this holistic system where musicians, venues, and dancers sustain each other.
Peter Beland
In 2013, Peter moved from Portland to Austin and sorely missed the mountains and the rugged beauty of the West. But, he found an equal, if different, measure of spiritual sustenance in the dimly lit honky tonks of central Texas and quickly dove into the Two-Stepping scene.
Since then, he has returned to Portland with his bar room style of the Texas Two-Step and taken naturally to teaching. He loves seeing faces brighten as folks "get that one move" and seeing people connect with one another. Dancing allows him to get lost in the moment and connect with others in the community
Jamie Raupp
Jamie grew up in a house filled with music and dance. With a father that is a square dance caller and instructor, he started square dancing at 8 years old, but then as a bitter punk, partner dancing had dropped from my life.
Fast forward to 2019, while watching one of his favorite local bands and helped by a little whiskey and a friend, he tried Two-Step and was hooked. 2020 forced him from the dance floor so he dove into the internet figuring out Two-Step at a deeper level. Now some 6 years later he feels that he has cracked the code to get you dancing confidently with no time at all.
FAQ
Do I need to reserve a spot? Reservations are encouraged as the class has a limited capacity. If the class is not full, walk-ins are welcome but your spot isn’t guaranteed.
Do I need prior dance experience? No dance experience is necessary, just a positive attitude. There will be a range of skill levels in the room, but this is a beginner class and we will start by teaching you the basics.
What style Two-Step do you teach? Like many couples dances, there are a number of variations of “Two-Step”, but what we teach is sometimes called Texas Two-Step or Barroom Two-Step because it is meant to be danced on crowded dance floors.
